It is illegal to throw a small amount of ammunition into the trash, as it can potentially be dangerous once in a trash truck, a compactor or conveyor at our local transfer sites. If a bullet is crushed, it could possibly go off sending the bullet or fragments of the bullet,  possibly causing harm to those around.

The environmental impact is of greater concern, as most bullets contain lead. Lead is considered a hazardous material in California and can cause major birth defects and poisoning. Sending bullets to a landfill can contaminate our water or soil.
